CAROLINE CLIFT

Another Caroline that was closer to Leach’s life, though not through direct involvement, was Caroline Clift. Caroline was
the wife of William Clift, First Conservator of the Hunterian Museum. They had one child, a daughter whose name was
                          also Caroline.

Leach was a friend and colleague of William Clift’s ever since his first residence in London. 1 There may have been an
increased sense of sympathy between them, as they both had oppressive workloads as caretakers of the collections at
                          their respective institutions. 2

The Elfortania drawing is taken from a painting of Caroline Clift (1820), in the collection of the Hunterian Museum.
